Our Story

History of Domaine Lyon Saint-Joseph

A place steeped in history, ideal for relaxation or reflection.

The history of the Domaine Lyon Saint-Joseph began in 1926, on the lands of the archdiocese, where a large building was built in the heart of greenery. This tranquil setting was home to seminarians from the Lyon region who came to study philosophy.

Over the decades, this haven of peace and quiet, dedicated to study, has welcomed denominational groups (priests, religious and lay people), spiritual retreats, meetings of Church movements, as well as trade union meetings and the first professional training courses.

The new millennium marked a major turning point. In 2005, the Archbishop of Lyon decided to open the estate to all, offering a hotel-restaurant service while retaining the faith-based groups.

In 2019, renovation and modernization work will be undertaken in the common areas and meeting rooms. An accrobranche park is being created in the Domaine's wooded area, the technological equipment is being totally redesigned (wifi, TV with VOD, customizable screens in common areas...) and a new kitchen team is offering an inventive, light menu.

The seminar of yesteryear has been transformed into a modern 3-star hotel, with an undeniable cachet and a warm welcome.

The park and forest of the Domaine

A haven of peace just five minutes from Vieux Lyon

The 5-hectare Domaine Lyon Saint-Joseph is located in the heart of the Francheville forest. Its grounds include a 1.5-hectare wooded area through which wild animals regularly roam.

Preserving this biodiversity is a priority. No construction is therefore permitted. The park is also subject to an annual tree survey, with each tree individually monitored.

The naturally exceptional setting of the estate's five hectares offers a wide range of leisure and sporting activities.

The mission of Domaine Lyon Saint-Joseph

Owned by the Diocese of Lyon, the Domaine Lyon Saint-Joseph is not just another hotel-restaurant; it has a mission.

Since it was converted from a seminary and is now open to all, the estate welcomes between 70,000 and 100,000 people a year, from all backgrounds, orientations and faiths. The Domaine's mission is to welcome them and enable them to have the best possible time; if they want to, they will discover the presence of Christ.

Everything at the Domaine is about Creation. And one of the ways we open our minds is through beauty. This is nothing new: the beauty of our cathedrals has proved it for centuries.

More modestly, with the resources available to our estate, by enhancing the park, for example, it's a question of highlighting Nature. Including a rope course in the forest or making it possible to walk around our park are part of this desire to help people rediscover the magnificent nature that we have been given to manage and protect.

By presenting works by contemporary artists and developing a musical programme, the aim is also to highlight human creation, the fruit of human labour. Isn't Saint Joseph a craftsman who fulfils his mission and magnifies his life through his work? It was therefore legitimate to present works of art here.

By highlighting Creation in all its forms, our domain speaks a language that can be understood by everyone, a discourse of unity between all human beings. And it seeks to fulfil its mission of contributing, in its own way, to bringing all people together in the same spirit of serenity and well-being.

We hope it succeeds.

The chapel at Domaine Lyon Saint-Joseph

A place open to all, so that everyone can find themselves.

The liturgical design of the chapel, at the entrance to the estate, focuses on the idea of the Resurrection and the Light.

The 150-seat chapel is open to all and is an ideal place for meditation.

You can reserve this space for celebrations or ceremonies on request by calling 04 78 59 22 35 or emailing : seminaire@dlsj.fr
